Syrian Refugee Crisis - Update from Norfolk County Council

Update from George Nobbs, Leader of Norfolk County Council on the Syrian Refugee Crisis:

Publication Date: 09.09.2015

I am writing to bring you up to date with the steps I have been taking to respond to the Syrian refugee crisis.

The Managing Director has written to local and health authority Chief Executives communicating  members’ concern about the humanitarian crisis,  and sharing the briefing paper circulated some weeks ago with your Group Leader (below)  that has been prepared on the Government’s existing refugee resettlement programme.   Our officers are also making urgent enquiries to the Home Office and the LGA to find out how the government will be following up the PM’s commitment that the UK take 1000s of Syrian refugees.  So far no information is available.

I have been approached by many of you and am aware of Councillors’ wish that the County do its part. I have also been approached by David McNally, with offers of help from the Norwich Football Club.

It is critical that services across Norfolk provide a co-ordinated and speedy response to this crisis, and to that end I am convening a task force of  community leaders to meet as a matter of urgency.  I have invited Group Leaders from all parties to participate.

Be assured that I am making this my personal priority.    If necessary, I will  bring a report to the next meeting of Policy and Resources Committee.

Yours sincerely

George
Leader – Norfolk County Council
